Peter Evan Davis: 1949 - 1998 Peter and I first met in 1989 at a Texas Cartridge Collectors Club meeting, shortly after he and his family moved to Houston. Despite being from the opposite end of the world (Australia), we had a lot of interests common: cartridges, cold beer, and large tracts of land (among other things). Pete was a champion long-range rifle shooter and also an avid .303 collector, and in 1990 acquired a rather large collection of cartridges to sell on consignment. After I offered to catalog them on computer in return for a few odd things, a mutual friend suggested our starting up a collectors' cartridge catalog. LeClair, Davis & Co. quickly became a major player in the cartridge collecting world; it gave us the opportunity to do some traveling, meet many other collectors, and acquire some interesting bits for our own collections as well. Not just a business partner, Pete was also a good friend, always willing to lend a hand or a sympathetic ear. He gave unselfishly of his time when my (now former) wife and I moved to a new house in 1995. A lasting monument to his carpentry skills is the "Temple of Tools", an 8x12 tool shed we put up as a hopeful first step in creating a permanent home for the cartridge company. That shed will probably stand longer than the house itself, and I hope my ex appreciates it. In many ways, Pete was the older brother I didnt have, and over the few years I knew him, we shared a lot of laughs, downed a few beers, chased some rare cartridges, and nearly got arrested in Memphis. He was the best friend a guy could have, and it was a very sad day when he and his family boarded the plane for his last flight home. On November 10th, 1998, Pete lost his fight with lung cancer, over a year after being diagnosed. He died peacefully at home in Australia, with his wife and two sons in attendance. Pete, my brother, I miss you terribly. |
